How to create products in TellUs

Step-by-step guide on how to create dream listings in the TellUs DMS system

This guide will help you create quality listings in TellUs DMS. Step by step, it shows you how to fill in all required and relevant fields to make sure your products get top visibility on Visitnorway.com.

Let’s go!

Step 1: Log in

To add a new product, log in with your Simpleview DMS credentials and select Products:

Select Add New Product on the right-hand side of the screen, shown in the picture below:

This will open the Product Type page shown in Step 2 below. You can also use the search field at the top of the page to find and edit an existing product.

Step 2: Select product type

When creating a new product, it is essential to carefully select the product type that best describes what you have to offer:

For regular and recurring guided tours or walks, do not select “Events” as the product type. They should be added as a normal product listing under “Activities” or “Guided Tours”.

For special guided tours or walks that only occur once or a few times a year, you can select “Events” as the product type.

Required fields

Please note that the following fields are obligatory: Category, Name, Description, Latitude, Longitude, and Main image. Listings that lack information in any of these fields will not be visible on Visitnorway.com.

Step 3: Basic information

The Product Details page looks like this:

It is recommended to fill in as many fields as you can on this page.

The following fields are required:

  • Name, Latitude and Longitude (coordinates)

If you don’t know your coordinates, simply click on the little map icon next to the fields Latitude and Longitude. A map opens and you can pick the right location and save.

Alternatively, you can find your coordinates via Google Maps:

  1. Open Google Maps.

  2. Right-click the place or area on the map where your product is situated.

  3. Select “What's here?”

  4. A screen appears at the bottom of the screen with the latitude and longitude.

When you have completed all the fields you can, select Save.

Top tip: Adding a booking website address (URL) has proved to increase conversions a great deal, especially if the link leads directly to a page where the users can book and/or buy your product.

Next up is Descriptions, which you’ll find in the menu on the left-hand side of the page.

Step 4: Descriptions

The Descriptions page looks like this:

  • Leave Default as is.

  • Select the relevant language. Please note that if you create language versions of a product, all relevant fields have to be completed in the chosen language. Otherwise the visibility of your product will be affected negatively.

  • In the field Description, provide clear, concise and useful information about your product. Aim for at least 1,000 characters (including spaces).

  • In the field Short, add a short, unique introduction/overview of your product. It should be 200-250 characters long (including spaces).

The text in the Short field is the first thing a user will see about your product in previews across Visit Norway, so use it to spark the users’ interest.

The Short must be different from the description. If you add the first sentence of the description in the Short field, it will be shown twice on the product page – so be sure to add a unique text.

That’s it for the Descriptions page! Now select Media just below Descriptions in the left-hand menu and trod along to Step 5.

Step 5: Media

In Step 5, you will make your product look pretty by adding nice images. You do this on the Media page, which looks like this:

For every image you select, complete the following fields shown on the right-hand side:

  • A descriptive Name

  • Estate: Visit Norway

  • Media type: Picture

  • The relevant Language

  • Alt text: Explain what the photo shows for the benefit of people with visual impairments and in case the picture doesn’t load (for example if the user has a slow internet connection). This is also better for SEO (search engine optimisation).

  • Add copyright details

Finished adding pictures? Then select Classifications in the left-hand menu, followed by Categories.

Step 6: Categories

The Categories page looks like this:

  • Search for relevant categories by adding a keyword in the Name field and press enter. For example “hiking”.

  • Make one (and only one!) category primary

  • Keep it simple and stick to the basics – apart from one primary category, pick max two subcategories per listing.

Visit Norway’s and TellUs' categories

Visit Norway and TellUs have different sets of categories. To make it possible to match the two sets, we have created so-called category mapping. This aims to match the categories in TellUs with the ones on Visit Norway.

Category mapping

The spreadsheet Category mapping instructions contains detailed information about how the categories in TellUs are reflected on Visit Norway. Columns B, D and F contain the category in TellUs, and columns J and L show how this combination is reflected on Visit Norway. For example: Rows 782 and 783 show that both Vandring and/or its subcategory Vandring/sykkel stier will result in the category The Great Outdoors: Hiking on Visit Norway.

Category IDs

It might be easier for you to use category IDs to find and use the correct categories. To display category IDs next to the category names, click on Actions in the top right-hand corner and choose Toggle Category ID display from the drop-down menu:

Step 7: Channels – send your listing to Visitnorway.com

The time has come to send your listing to Visitnorway.com! You do this by connecting your listing to the Visit Norway channel.

Click on Add Channels in the top right-hand corner of the screen and tick the box next to Standard oppføring, as shown in the picture below:

Done! Now check out how to maximise your presence on Visit Norway:

Enhance visibility and create even better products

If the product is available in your social media account and TripAdvisor, you can link to them in TellUs. By connecting to TripAdvisor, the product’s rating and reviews will be visible, which increases the chance of users buying or booking it.

Click on Social Media on the left-hand side, pick the relevant social media accounts you want to connect and add the relevant link as shown below:

Step 9: Price and price table

It is better to use the dedicated fields to show prices instead of adding this information in the description field. This way you make valuable information more visible and visitors will be more likely to buy your product based on how complete your offer is:

To add the price as shown in the picture above, go to Text Types under the Descriptions menu. Click Actions on the right-hand side and select Add Text Type. Now search for three fields: Price, Text after the price, and Text before the price. Insert price and suitable texts as in the example below:

If your product has many different prices (for example different rates for different hoteal rooms), you can add them all in a table on the right side of your listing as shown below:

You do this by going to the Tickets/Units tab (depending on the type of your product), available in the left-hand menu. Then click the Actions button followed by Add Unit. Now select the type of your ticket or unit:

Click Next and fill in the fields for each type you chose. Pick a price basis that fits the rest of your fields - it will be displayed after the price. Example below:

If you always have one set price, you can use the “(kr) Guide” field.

If the price varies, you can leave the “(kr) Guide” field empty and edit your tickets or units further by clicking on the three dots next to each ticket/unit on the right-hand side of the screen and select Edit prices:

Next, click the Actions button and select “Add” new price. A window like the one below will pop up. Pick a date range, fill in the minimum and maximum price for your product, and click Save:

Step 10: Opening hours

It is also recommended to use the dedicated fields to show your opening hours, like on the listing shown here:

To add your opening hours, click on Openings on the left-hand side of the screen. Then click on Actions on the right-hand side and select Add Opening.

Enter a descriptive name – this can be a simple date range – for your opening. Then select the relevant date range, click on the three dots on the right-hand side and select Edit Days to add detailed information:

In the Openings tab, you can also mark if your product is available during Christmas and New Year, or if it is closed for a longer period of time.

Step 11: Adding more facilities

When adding facilities (amenities) to your product, please refer to the document below. Facilities work similarly to categories: TellUs and Visit Norway use different sets, and they need to be matched correctly for Visit Norway to understand which facilities should be assigned to your listing.

Detailed facility mapping instructions [link here]

The document above contains a list of all available facilities on Visit Norway in columns A and B. In column G you can see the TellUs facility IDs you need to mark if you want Visitnorway to assign you a facility from columns A and B.

For example:

If you want to add the Laundry room facility to your campsite's listing, you need to mark the facility with ID 7_1207 in TellUs DMS:

Go to TellUs DMS and select your product. Click on the Classification tab and select Facilities. Under Actions, select Toggle Facility ID display. Next, search for the number “1207”:

Extra: Adding a GPX file

Each listing has a map and you can use GPX files to show waypoints, tracks, and routes.

You do so simply by clicking “Upload new media” under the Actions button and select your GPX file. Set type to “Other” and give it a descriptive name so that it is clear to everyone what is it:

Create a GPX file

You can create your own GPX files in TellUs. Go to the tab Routes, click the Actions button and select Add Route:

Give the route a descriptive name and select a suitable grade and type, then click Save at the bottom of the page. Now click on the three dots next to your new route and select Edit.

You can now add a Route description. And more importantly, you can mark route points on the map simply by clicking on it.

Below the map, you’ll find fields where you can add instructions for each point. Once you have finished building your route, click Save and exit the route builder. To export the GPX file, click on the three dots next to your new route and select Export:

Make the route available

Last but not least, to make the route available in your listing you need to add it to the media section. You’ll find instructions on how to do that if you go back to the beginning of this section above.
